Butterfly Metamorphosis

It's never too late to become who you're meant to be.

A 3-dimensional virtual reality piece, painted with Google Tilt Brush.

I believe that there is so much beauty in one’s journey. The butterfly’s metamorphosis teaches us an important lesson about growth: we may need to be completely undone in order to reshape ourselves into something new, to become a greater version of ourselves, to allow ourselves to soar. It’s never too late to become who you’re meant to be.

Take a closer look at this piece on Google VR Sketches.

I had the great pleasure of painting this piece with Google Tilt Brush as part of their Artist in Residence program. Thank you so much to the  Tilt Brush team for this amazing opportunity!

Technical Inspiration:

I wanted to create a magical experience that would unfold before your eyes.

While most Tilt Brush pieces focus on the finished product as the piece, I wanted to explore the sequential process as the piece, utilizing Tilt Brush’s playback feature.

OBJECTIVES

  • Find a new approach to using Tilt Brush.
    Push the medium.

  • Most VR pieces at the time were static images where the finished piece was the piece. I wanted to make a piece where the process was the piece.

  • Use the playback feature.
Attempt animating with a still image.

  • Create a meaningful piece.

Challenges

  • Planning out the entire spacial layout and sequence

  • Performing for the sequential recording: all the stages of the metamorphosis had to be painted in order — with no mistakes!

Early Prototype Sketch.
Planning out the layout, testing the timing, learning how to paint each step.

This piece has been...
